Miksi Jensillä ja Genesillä oli kränää..

We never made any comments about Aachen in December 2002 other than we thought it was a great Show. The pictures are still online:

Here is an email we sent Jens before the Show:

Subject: Aachen Show

Dear Jens,

Raquel and I have discussed your Show at length. It is not a good deal for us. You want to charge us 2500+ Euros for 40 square meters (for both booths). We are the MAIN attraction. And, you are charging 8-9 Euros per person for 1000 to 2000 people from which you have offered us nothing. What is wrong with this picture?

We can take the big room in the Hotel (five stars) for all day with no restrictions for less than the original quote they gave you, which is in any case three times less, bigger and catered! Entry here is free! We can just hold our event there.

You need to work out a better package for us, because we still would like to do this, but what you have offered is unsatisfactory.

Plus, the News post you promised has not appeared and we do not feel you are doing a very good job publicizing the event. The site is still not in English for example.

Guido let us know you forgot to call him.

Sincerely,

Raquel and Bill

We were the main attraction at the Show - without the Pegasos there would not been a show. Before we got involved directly Vesalia and KDH might not have even come. There was one AmigaOne in Ron's booth, which he politely ask if we minded that he display. As we recall the system barely booted.

As for the Show, we provided free over 500 T-Shirts. We set up and displayed the number of systems exactly as we had coordinated. It was Jens who informed us the day before the Show that he was going to cut the display space down from the two rooms originally planned to one. A quick look at the pictures above should provide ample testimony to result of such a decision. In fact the end of our display tables would not have fit in the room and would have had to shift so close to the front of the room that it would have been difficult to move around. We insisted that he not change the plan. He wanted to pass additional charges on to us beyond what we had agreed. Keep in mind by this time we have more than 20 people on the way (or there already), including CISC (from Oslo), Piru and Teemu (from Helsinki). We made a big effort to support the event. We even coordinated an appearance of the kids football team we sponsored!

Jens kept all the money collected at the door and charged us for floor space as agreed. We knew the pricing from the building and knew he had added a margin to this too. Nevertheless, we paid his invoice in cash (nearly 3000 Euros) and in full at the Show as agreed. Raquel made the payment. Ron van Herk, Thomas and Gerald witnessed the payment. Jens signed the invoice paid in full and stated, "I hope we can do business with you again. Thank you very much." Of course, we also provided him with a VAT number.

Jens tried to stick us with additional charges after the Show because he claimed he had not included them. We refused.

A few other notes:

The first Catweasel drivers were written by Sharwin and Rakesh Raghoebardayal who worked for Thendic-France when they did them.

The Dorint was also paid in full. They had overcharged us for food in the extra room we had. We had a great party there that included lots of developers and users. When we settled the food and beverage issue everything was paid.

If there was ever really something legally wrong don't you think Jens would have done something as much as he talks about it?

FInally, we were directed to his "Christian" comment on ANN about forgiveness -- it is remarkable given all the noise he has made about us that he would even suggest such a notion.

Here is the last word from us, as we need to get back to work: Aachen 2002 was a great Show!

P.S. Have a look at this photo:

That is Yalcin Balci, Chief Operating Office of the Dogan Media Group in the center (Helmut Jost is on the right, former ESCOM and Commodore Germany CEO). Dogan was the company that gave us the STB development contract and order that was scrapped when the war started in Iraq (never heard us make excuses about that!). Remember what happen to that economy when that happened? After things settled down in November 2003, Yalcin wanted to get started again with 250,000 units for initial delivery in January 2004. We could not even come close to supporting this (not to mention everything else going on in our life at the time). Yalcin launched FreeTV in Turkey in January 2004. The STBs in the end were provided by a Korean manufacturer. FreeTV is a big success in Turkey. We still have a shot at the advanced version of the system when they get ready to introduce it, which as of now still seems months away.
